Rad Labs was inspired by Nest. The brief we received was to either build upon Nest’s platform or disrupt it, we chose the latter. As a group we mapped out Nest’s system and business model to identify what the product was offering their customers. What we found and what interest us was Nest’s ability to create a connected home and its ability to make your home more comfortable by automatically adjusting through the users behavior while making your home more energy efficient.
WE IDENTIFIED THAT NEST ONLY WORKS IF YOU EITHER OWN OR ARE IN CONTROL OF A CENTRAL HEATING AND COOLING SYSTEM IN YOUR HOME. THIS ISN'T A REALITY FOR MOST OF US LIVING IN NYC AND CITIES ALIKE, MOST OF US ARE RENTERS.
THE ISSUE IS RENTERS LACK CONTROL OF OUR HEATING AND COOLING SITUATIONS AND RENTERS USE HACKS TO TAKE BACK CONTROL OF THEIR HOME’S TEMPERATURE. RADLABS WANTS TO TAKE THESE EXISTING HACKS AND MAKE THEM MORE EFFICIENT, MODULAR, SAFER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT, AND OVERALL BETTER DESIGNED.
Renters in the Northeast that live in older buildings have to deal with radiators that are blazing hot or not on at all in the winter. Or in the summer renters fight the heat with window AC's, fans, and open windows at night. We have to become very scrappy when the harsh winter and scorching summer comes around. RadLabs’ first product Heat Flow circulates stagnite air in the room towards a heated radiator. This makes the room heat faster and the room feel more comfortable. We searched on Instructables and found a few heating DIY solutions. We look at a few of them and took pieces from a few and redesigned them to make them more efficient, modular, safer for the environment, and overall better designed.
THE MOST EXCITING ASPECT IN OUR EYES IS THE COMMUNITY PART OF THE BUSINESS MODEL. RENTERS WILL HAVE THE ABILITY TO USE OUR PLATFORM TO SHARE TIPS, TRICKS, AND IDEAS WITH EACH OTHER. THIS IS THE WAY WE ARE TRYING TO DISRUPT NEST. NEST WANTS TO TAKE THE USERS OUT OF THE EQUATION WHEN IT COMES TO THEIR HOME, WE ARE TRYING MAKE THE USERS THE CENTER PIECE.
The kits themselves would be sold on the RADLABS platform where video tutorials produced by the team are also available. By mapping out financial projections for the next five years, the team saw the need to round out their offering. In the second year of the business model, RADLABS will begin producing collaboration kits, designed by outside designers but manufactured and sold by RADLABS. In addition, they will sell ad space on their site. The kits, and videos both build the RADLABS community and drive users to the site.
RadLabs is an idea for a socially and environmentally aware business. We used the Lean business model to identify a market (renters) and a pain point (the lack of control of their homes temperature) to create a valuable business proposition. The larger idea of RadLabs goes further than just hacks. The RadLabs online platform will feature videos that help you improve your rentals temperature created by us.
